I’m Scott from the YouTube channel @BusGreaseMonkey. We hit the road in a 1947 Greyhound bus—a vintage vehicle we’ve spent years converting into a livable space. Over time, we upgraded it to be more comfortable, more efficient, and truly capable of off-grid living.
We had just wrapped up a 6-day trip, and this time, we made a clear decision: no shore power, no generator—just batteries and solar. We wanted to see if the system could really support us through the entire journey. When we got back, the battery was still at 47%.That pretty much answered the question.
Turning a Bus into a Home
Step inside, and it’s hard to believe this bus is nearly 80 years old. We remodeled the interior—new flooring, better layout, and a full set of electric appliances: fridge, microwave, air fryer, water heater, and even air conditioning, all running entirely on the onboard power system.
At the same time, we focused heavily on efficiency, adding extra insulation in the walls, floor, and even behind blocked windows to reduce heat loss and stabilize the interior temperature. The result is simple: even in 90°F heat, the inside stays comfortable without constantly draining power. At that point, it’s no longer just a vehicle—it’s a fully functional living space.

Most of the time, we forgot we were off-grid. It wasn’t until the end of the trip, seeing nearly half the battery still remaining, that it really sank in—we had lived fully for six days without relying on anything external.
