More Speed with Less Voltage: A Father and Son’s Li Time Lithium Upgrade Story

For anglers on electric-only reservoirs, weight and power are everything. My name is Carl Haugan from Maryland, and this is the story of how my son and I transformed our fishing experience by switching to Li Time lithium batteries, shedding a combined 1,000+ pounds from our boats and gaining unprecedented performance.

I fish exclusively on Maryland's electric-only reservoirs with my 16 ft. aluminum bass boat. My setup was powered by a 60V Ray Electric Outboard and a 12V trolling motor. The power source? A staggering ten 6V lead-acid batteries and one 12V battery. The weight was immense, and my top speed was capped at 6.7-6.8 mph.

Gary and I discussed my goal: to run my 60V motor on a 48V system for efficiency. I made the switch.

  • Previous Setup: (10) 6V lead-acid batteries + (1) 12V lead-acid battery. Total Weight: ~700+ lbs.
  • New Li Time Setup: (4) 12V 230Ah batteries (in series for 48V) + (1) 12V 100Ah trolling motor battery.
  • Weight Savings: A massive 580 lbs removed from the boat!

The performance results were astounding. Even though I was running my 60V motor on a lower 48V system, my top speed jumped to just under 8 mph. The simple equation proved true: less voltage plus less weight equals more speed and more run time.

So Good, I Upgraded My Golf Cart Too!

Impressed with my boat's new life, I contacted Gary again about my 48V EZ-Go golf cart. It was running on six heavy 8V lead-acid batteries weighing nearly 420 lbs.
